My new start in Belgium
As a child, I always wanted to move, just like many of my friends. But after four years and relocating five times, I can say that the process of packing and unpacking isn’t enjoyable. However, I still find it exciting to live in new places, especially because I move to different countries or cities each time.
After four years in the Netherlands, I’m now moving to Belgium for my communication studie. I’ve found a nice apartment with my best friend where we’ll be living. It feels like a fresh start, and I’m curious about Belgium’s culture, even though it’s not far from the Netherlands.
I’ve been living in Belgium for 8 months now, and I like it here much better than in the Netherlands. I have many friends in the same city, and I feel really comfortable here. Maybe it’s because when I moved to the Netherlands, COVID-19 came hit shortly after, making it difficult to meet people. But eventually, I did get to know many people there too.
People often ask me what I’ll do after my studies in Belgium, whether I’ll go back to the Netherlands or return to Curaçao. I’ve thought about it a lot, but I choose the fourth option: I’ll see what happens when the time comes for my sixth move. When I leave, I prefer to go to a new place I’ve never been before, unlike all the other places I’ve lived. Exploring a city before moving there isn’t important to me, as you can do that once you’re living there. Yes, it’s risky, but that’s also what makes it fun. It’s best to go in with an open mind.
